To all: apologies for this somewhat off-topic thread.
Hi Andy,
This is definitely not a fault of your dir but some problem on my system, I shall try here to fully describe the problem and some of the steps I've taken.
The Error: 'Visual C++ Libraries - Runtime Error - abnormal program termination'
This occurs when opening some .dir files (including for example files in the Learning/Lingo Examples/ folder "Parent Scripts.dir" and "text.dir") and also within the program when embedding fonts. (I also often get the same error with some shockwave sites). It occurs both on my machine at home PentiumII/Win98/128RAM and at work Athlon/WinME/256RAM I have had contact with MM support (polite, forthcoming but ultimately couldn't do anything for me). They say that it is a completely unique error and must be related to the system. I have read a number of articles on M$'s site about the error but they all relate to other software. I have written to them for advice.
I use Director 8.0 at work on WinME with a licensed version which I also installed at home on Win98. The error occurence is very specific and identical on both machines.
Steps I have taken on advice received through Direct-L mailing list: 1) Deleted all fonts from both systems except those which refuse to be deleted. 2)Experimented with msvcrt.dll, msvcrt10.dll, msvcrt20.dll 3)Using Ctrl/Alt/Del I've ended all running tasks except for Director and Explorer and tested.
To no avail.
I would be grateful to any advice forthcoming.
With sincere regards, Darryl
