I've been sitting on this news for a while, and it's finally public: Rackspace is releasing its cloud source code under the Apache license. We're also partnering with NASA to develop the framework for creating the virtualization provisioning system that will power the next generation of Rackspace Cloud Servers and NASA's Nebula computing system. This new system, called OpenStack, is now available at http://openstack.org.

The main goal is two-fold: one, to help avoid lock-in, which is the primary reason companies are hesitant to move to the cloud, and two, to speed up development of the fundamental parts of the cloud fabric so that businesses can focus on the parts that differentiate them from their competitors.

I've flown to Texas twice in the past 3 weeks to work with the NASA team, and I have to say that I'm very excited by what's going on here. I think that this will jump-start the next generation of computing the way that the LAMP stack jump-started the internet 15 years ago.

Oh, and did I mention that this is all being done in Python? ;-)
